With the wings up, the underlying Technic structure that makes the folding wings and their connections to the fuselage sturdy are highly visible. The sublight engines follow the angles of the nacelles. In fact, you may notice that we did exactly that, and unfortunately didn’t realize until after we’d shot the pictures, though even positioned properly it’s still quite ugly. It’s also easy to attach backwards by accident. Since it’s built from plates rather than bricks (as the upper wings on LEGO Star Wars Imperial Shuttle sets typically are), the upper wing on the Bad Batch shuttle is studded on one side, with an anti-stud texture on the other. While it’s not reasonable to expect a UCS-style vehicle that’s “properly” minifig-scale (as variable as the definition for that may also be), the minifigs that accompany this set dwarf the shuttle itself. By comparing the characters on the show entering and exiting through that hatch, it’s clear that the LEGO version is only about 1/3 minifig-scale. The “real” vehicle is large enough to feature a ramp that folds down from the cockpit section. Although similar to the many tri-wing shuttles that appear throughout the entirety of the Star Wars canon, this shuttle is unique to the Bad Batch and first appeared with them in their debut episode on the final season of The Clone Wars. The “Bad Batch shuttle” depicts the Havoc Marauder, a customized Omicron-class attack shuttle. The upper wing is attached to the cover for the crew compartment, which in turn connects to the cockpit canopy. A large gap remains between the wings and the nacelles to allow the wings to fold up. 1×2 plates with Technic pin holes create hinges to attach angled areas between the crew compartment and wings. The folding wings are composed mostly of wedge plates and attach to the Technic joint disks on the main fuselage. Technic joint disks with liftarms provide anchors for the folding wings. Click-hinges provide angled connections and even some inversions, just behind the cockpit section. The cockpit then attaches to the aft fuselage and crew compartment. The shuttle itself begins with the nose and cockpit, with tiles angled with hinge bricks and a few studs-out wedges for shaping. These are very standard LEGO Star Wars speeders, and we’ll return to them later in the review. The first bag includes the parts for two speeder bikes. The sticker sheet itself features stripes, technical details, and display screens. Despite their relatively small size, the instruction booklet and sticker sheet come in their own wrapper. Seven numbered bags provide the parts, with two bags numbered 1. Appropriately, three of the clone troopers appear in the upper-right of the box’s front, rather than an unrelated character like Darth Vader. LEGO Star Wars packaging for builders of all ages is highly standardized, with a “hero shot” showing the minifigs and vehicles in action, with key play features highlighted on the back. Providing TBB with products for review guarantees neither coverage nor positive reviews. The LEGO Group provided The Brothers Brick with an early copy of this set for review. The set is available for pre-order now, and will be released on August 1st. The first (and so far only) LEGO set based on the TV show is 75314 The Bad Batch Attack Shuttle, which includes 969 pieces with five minifigures for US $99.99 | CAN $139.99 | UK £89.99. During the final season of The Clone Wars that aired on Disney+ last year, one episode featured Clone Force 99, also known as the “Bad Batch.” Through that backdoor pilot, this group of misfit clone troopers got their own Disney+ series, with inevitable LEGO Star Wars tie-ins.

They were devastated to have to interrupt their project. With no school and no dorms, Simonian was forced to return to his parents’ home in Malibu, Byrne to Long Island with his family. The Sidetalk account went from a few thousand followers to tens of thousands in a matter of days. Nicolas Heller, whom they had befriended on Instagram not long before, was with them at the time and posted his perspective on tagging them as a promotion. But it was the Purim video that was their breakthrough. We were just like, ‘Hey, guys, what’s up?’ ”Īfter starting Sidetalk their freshman year in the fall of 2019, the duo spent most days of the week outside, after, before, and in between classes, filming the people they encountered. “We ran up the steps of the brownstone into the house, and there were all these Hasidic men going crazy, jumping around. “We filmed that video in 30 minutes.” They’d been having a terrible day finding nothing to shoot, but with a mix of ease and fearlessness, they happened to see an open door and walked through. “We couldn’t remake it if we tried,” Byrne admits. There’s an unhinged energy to the encounter. In one of the boys’ favorite episodes, filmed on the dangerous cusp of lockdown last year, they crashed a Purim party in Williamsburg and danced with Trump-loving Hasidim. Watching them, I couldn’t always tell if they were being judgmental or celebratory. In the best episodes, Simonian has a subdued joy at being around chaos, like an anthropologist excited to join in the customs of a foreign land. 54, turned out to be fairly tame - less guerrilla than some of the most memorable Sidetalks. Byrne, who resembles a Kennedy and speaks in the octave of Sam Elliott, is the cameraman, but beyond that, it would be hard to pick apart who’s really doing what - they often finish each other’s sentences. Simonian, the one with a shock of black Timothée Chalamet hair, is the straight man on-camera. “If I don’t get your vote, don’t let me find out who you are, ’cause I’m comin’ ova there, I’mma crack yoo ova tha head with a loaf of sem-o-leeena!” Mo yells into the camera as he paces the length of Mulberry Street. You might meet a man named Jesus humping a tree in Central Park or a foulmouthed child talking about women with big butts. Each post begins with the familiar bing-bong sound of the subway’s “Stand clear of the closing doors” recording, but after that, you might find the sloe-eyed Simonian deadpanning into the camera as a disturbed woman screams about Jezebel’s children. It’s not what you might expect if you’ve ever seen an episode of their raucous one-minute Instagram show, Sidetalk. The Saturday in January is crystalline and frigid, but the two NYU students arrive with open puffer jackets, no gloves, and a “Let’s get right down to business” competence that makes it possible to forget they’re only 19. on the dot, just as they said they would. Be sure to differentiate between charges and paid claims or costs. While it says charges, the numbers indicate what the health plan actually paid. The following chart shows Solis' medical bills. (That is of course if the bureaucracy will help you.) Most California counties operate similarly so if you find patient enrolled Medi-Cal or even the county indigent program, it will be easier to get reliable numbers. He had no charges after 2004, which is when he moved into the motel. Solis signed a waver and the health plan produced his medical charges from 2002 to 2006. That meant all of Solis' medical claims were in one place. In Solano County, all Medicaid patients are enrolled in a managed care health plan. Solis qualified for Social Security Disability Income and Medicaid. Relying on the hospital for billing records is tricky because patients can go to more than one hospital. You'll most likely have to get the patient's medical bills, records and other documents from the hospital or health plan (if they are enrolled in one). You need them to be entirely transparent.Ĭalculating one homeless patient's health costs Keep this in mind while searching for people to write about. In addition to the peer-reviewed studies and abstract quotes from experts, you need solid, local data. If you're like I was – filing a story nearly every day – set aside a one or two hours each week to find relevant studies and interview experts. It may take several weeks or months before anyone turns up. Meet with them and the hospital public relations officials early to explain your project and get their buy-in.īe patient. Hospital social workers can also be great resources, but tend to be more cautious about helping because of HIPAA, the federal patient privacy law. They are very busy people, however, so call them once a week to kindly remind them of your project. If the caseworker trusts you, they can be immensely helpful. They know individuals and stories, and if they're good their clients trust them. While it's important to have a good relationship with the directors of these programs to guarantee good access, the caseworkers on the frontlines are your key to finding people. Start by getting to know the advocates who work with the homeless daily at shelters, the county programs, food banks, etc. The work for a project like this can be divided into two broad categories:įinding people: Plant seeds early and be patientįinding homeless people to illustrate these scenarios takes time – lots of it. Focusing on the immense costs of one individual effectively demonstrated the magnitude of the problem. Malcolm Gladwell's piece called " Million-Dollar Murray" in the New Yorker inspired my story on Solis. Second, I wanted to quantify the medical costs for one homeless individual. First, what happens when a homeless person is hospitalized and has no place to finish recuperating after being discharged? What does the hospital do? Where do they go? While conceiving the idea to write about the health care costs of the chronically homeless, two aspects of this problem interested me most. I've also included relevant research, an expert list, and tips I wish someone had given me. Here is some advice on where to start, who to talk to, and how to organize your time to report this story. That's the reason to convince your editor to write about the health care costs of homelessness in your community. Taxpayers and people with private insurance pay for this fruitless care, as hospitals shift costs onto them. They return to the hospital for more costly treatment again and again. Because their cases are so complicated they require expensive treatment and extra time from hospital staff.īut despite receiving repeated rounds of intensive and costly treatment, their health rarely improves when they return to the streets. Many have chronic health problems worsened by living outside, in addition to substance abuse problems and untreated mental illness. Hospital emergency room staffs call these patients frequent fliers. Nearly every community has at least one chronically homeless person like him. Solis' case represents the immense health care costs associated with homelessness. In three years, Solis racked up nearly $1 million in medical charges - paid for by taxpayers. Solis' health never improved it worsened because he slept outside and couldn't properly care for his diabetes or heart disease. Solis would leave the hospital only to return after police found him passed out, again. There, doctors often admitted him to treat his multiple chronic health problems and so he could detoxify safely. Solis frequently passed out drunk in public, and police brought him to the hospital emergency room. Angelo Solis is a chronic alcoholic in his late 60s who was homeless for many years in Solano County, California. |
